Review for complete series
Sakura is a mangaka - work and deadlines keep her so busy that she barely has time to meet her friends yet alone get into a relationship. When her friend and colleague invites her to a goukon, Sakura reluctantly agrees. There she meets the handsome, rich but rude doctor, Iku, who promptly suggests a relationship with her as a cover-story for his always worrying parents. After thinking it over and despite his bad character, Sakura agrees - after all, some first-hand experience might help with her manga writing!
Spicy Pink is a short series with only two volumes - yet it felt quite a good deal longer when reading. And I mean that in a good way! I think this is one of the most realistic manga I have read. Not that they always need to be, but the flow of the story was just perfect. I loved how the characters and relationships developed.
Sakura is a cute lead character, although not an untypical one when it comes to author Yoshizumi. I think the most interesting part about her is her being a mangaka. This series gives a nice insight into this profession - it shows the price of having your hobby become your work. Sakura loves what she is doing but it's a tough job nonetheless. She feels sorrow when people throw at her that she shouldn't complain as her job requires her to do what she'd be doing in her free time anyway. But Sakura thinks because her work is so important to her, it is even more stressful as she has high expectations of herself.
The male lead Iku is wonderful. Apart from their first encounter where he recommends Sakura to undergo a cosmetic surgery, he is not at all as rude as she gives him credit for. He likes to tease but he is also caring and attentive. He's had his share of bad experiences with love before which also gives him a vulnerable side. He is also a caring brother who looks over his younger sister but knows when he should stay out of her business.
I think the two work great as a couple. They have wonderful dynamics - they quarrel a lot but neither is spiteful and they make up again fairly fast. The fact that both of them have busy jobs prevents any drama of one not having enough time for the other. And just the fact that the relationship evolves slowly is very nice. The ending is also lovely and leaves room for own thoughts.
The supporting cast is also a nice lot. Even the ones that may first come across as unpleasant turn out to have their good sides. It is just a series that has enough conflict to keep the story going, but never pushes too hard that you feel that this is just a hot pot of drama. Definitely one of my favourites of Yoshizumi's works!

Her debut manga was a yomikiri (short story) called "Radical Romance" that was published in 1984, in the summer issue of Ribon Original. She is known as a social mangaka, and is a good friend of fellow mangakas Naoko Takeuchi, Ai Yazawa, Miho Obana, and Megumi Mizusawa.
Yoshizumi currently (as of 2007) has her works published in both Ribon and Chorus.
